A transfer switch in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a device that automatically switches the power source from the main utility power to the backup power (usually from batteries) when it detects a failure or interruption in the main power supply. This ensures that connected devices continue to receive power without interruption.
There are two main types of transfer switches:
1. **Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)**: This type detects power loss and switches to the backup source automatically without user intervention. It’s commonly used in critical systems that require continuous power.
2. **Manual Transfer Switch (MTS)**: This requires the user to manually switch from the main power to the backup source. It's typically used in smaller setups or for less critical applications.
In a UPS system, the transfer switch helps maintain the uptime of connected equipment, protecting against data loss and hardware damage during power outages.
