The largest source of electricity in the U.S. is
natural gas. As of recent years, it has surpassed coal and other sources to become the dominant source of power generation.
Natural gas is popular because it’s relatively clean-burning compared to coal, and it’s also abundant and efficient for electricity generation. Gas-fired power plants can be ramped up or down quickly, making them ideal for meeting changing electricity demands throughout the day.
Following natural gas,
renewable energy sources (like wind, solar, and hydropower) are rapidly growing and contributing a larger share to the U.S. electricity grid, but natural gas still leads as the primary source for now.
