A circuit breaker reset is the process of turning a circuit breaker back on after it has been tripped (turned off automatically).
Circuit breakers are safety devices in electrical systems that protect the wiring and devices from overloads or short circuits. When there is too much current flowing through the circuit (due to an overload or fault), the breaker trips, cutting off the power to prevent damage.
To reset a tripped circuit breaker:
- Locate the Breaker Panel: This is usually in a utility room, basement, or closet.
- Find the Tripped Breaker: A tripped breaker will often be in the "off" position, or it may be slightly in between the "on" and "off" positions.
- Switch the Breaker Off First: If the breaker is in between, push it all the way to the "off" position.
- Turn It Back On: Flip the breaker back to the "on" position.
If the breaker trips again after resetting, there may be an ongoing issue, like an overloaded circuit or a fault, and itβs a good idea to check the connected devices or consult an electrician.
