The two main categories of induction motors are:
- Squirrel Cage Induction Motor:
- This is the most common type of induction motor.
- It has a rotor made of laminated iron cores, with conducting bars (usually aluminum or copper) embedded in it, forming a "cage-like" structure.
- Itβs simple, durable, and requires little maintenance.
- Wound Rotor Induction Motor:
- In this motor, the rotor has windings similar to the stator windings.
- External resistors or controllers can be connected to the rotor windings to control speed or torque.
- This type is used when high starting torque is needed or for adjustable-speed applications.
Both types work on the principle of electromagnetic induction, but the rotor construction and performance characteristics differ.
