In a star (also called "wye") connection, the relationship between line current and phase current is simple.
- Phase Current (I_phase): This is the current flowing through each individual load or phase in the star connection.
- Line Current (I_line): This is the current flowing in the line conductor, which supplies power to the load.
Relationship:
In a star connection,
the line current is equal to the phase current. So:
\[
I_{\text{line}} = I_{\text{phase}}
\]
This means that the current flowing through the wire connecting the power source to the load is the same as the current flowing through each load or phase.
Why is this so?
- In a star connection, each phase is connected to the neutral point, and the current in each phase flows through the respective line conductor.
- Since the load currents are the same for each phase, the line current (which is connected directly to the phase) is equal to the phase current.
This is different from the delta connection, where the line current is √3 times the phase current.
