The voltmeter was invented by
Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist, in the early 19th century. Volta is best known for his work on electricity and for inventing the
voltaic pile, the first chemical battery. While Volta didn't create the voltmeter itself, his pioneering work with electricity laid the foundation for the development of instruments that could measure electric potential, or voltage.
The
volt (the unit of electric potential) is named in his honor. The voltmeter, as we know it today, has evolved over time, but it owes much of its development to Volta's discoveries in the field of electricity.
